چکیده

This paper describes how a graduate course in multilingual grammar engineering has been used to inform the development of the LinGO Grammar Matrix. When the course was first taught (in 2004), the Grammar Matrix consisted only of the cross-linguistic core grammar. Over time, the lab instructions for the students in the course sparked the development of extensions to the Matrix providing ‘libraries’ of analyses of crosslinguistically variable phenomena. At the same time, the students’ course work has provided valuable feedback both in error checking of the core grammar and refinement of the libraries. Based on the experience of teaching this class for four years, I suggest that grammar engineering courses present a rich opportunity for the combination of pedagogy and research. Involving even beginning grammar engineers in on-going investigations can be rewarding for all involved.

Evaluating a Crosslinguistic Grammar Resource: A Case Study of Wambaya

This paper evaluates the LinGO Grammar Matrix, a cross-linguistic resource for the development of precision broad coverage grammars, by applying it to the Australian language Wambaya. Despite large typological differences between Wambaya and the languages on which the development of the resource was based, the Grammar Matrix is found to provide a significant jump-start in the creation of the gr...

Selective vs. comprehensive grammar correction in writing pedagogy: Counter evidence to Truscott’s view

To date, controversy among scholars exists on whether or not teachers should react to EFL learners' written grammar errors. This study investigated the effect of three feedback types (i.e., selective, comprehensive, and the one recommended by Truscott (1999), that is, no correction) with regard to possible improvements in accuracy in the writings of a total of 66 elementary EFL learners. It, fu...

A Coordination Module for a Crosslinguistic Grammar Resource

The Grammar Matrix is a resource for linguists writing grammars of natural languages; however, up to this point it has not included support for coordination. In this paper, we survey the typological range of coordination phenomena in the world’s languages, then detail the support, both syntactic and semantic, for those phenomena in the Grammar Matrix. Furthermore, we describe the concept of a M...
